Back in my Grandmother's time, and even my mother practiced this, women had everyday dishes and then they had their prized pieces. These prized  pieces did not usually command a high dollar. Some were actually give-aways, but none the less these women set these dishes aside from their daily serveware,only to be  brought out on the special occassions. That is why today we are seeing all of these beautiful pieces that are free from cracks or chips as if brand new.
